A trademark tree of the Okanagan, this long-lived conifer grows to 100 feet or more. The chiselled bark on the younger trees is black to dark red-brown, on mature trees is yellow-brown to russet and broken up into scaly plates. Its thick bark makes it almost resistant to wildfires. This adaptable tree is well suited to large open fields, or on rocky slopes.
