Evening Primrose

Oenothera caespitosa

Tufted evening primrose is a low, nearly stemless native wildflower that grows from a stout taproot and produces large, fragrant white flowers that open in the evening and fade to soft pink after pollination by night-flying moths. Native to the dry western half of North America, it forms a spreading rosette of gray-green foliage and tolerates the poor, rocky soils typical of open rangeland and foothill sites. Its long bloom season from spring through summer provides an unusual evening spectacle in the xeriscape or rock garden.

Soil needs

This evening primrose requires a dry, well-drained site to thrive and to ensure a long lifespan; it is intolerant of heavy or consistently moist soils, which shorten its life considerably, and performs best in lean, gritty ground.
