Coral Bells - Native

Heuchera richardsonii

Prairie alumroot is a tough, drought-adapted native coral bells that forms a low mound of heart-shaped, evergreen leaves, with airy stems of small greenish-cream flowers rising well above the foliage in late spring. Native across the prairie and savanna regions of North America, it thrives in the poor, rocky soils where competition from taller plants is limited, and its flowers draw hummingbirds and bees alike. It is exceptionally low-maintenance, resisting mildew, insects, and browsing wildlife.

This species is at home in mesic to dry, often rocky or poor soils and requires good drainage above all else; it does not need rich or amended soil and can struggle in overly fertile, moisture-retentive beds.
