Columbine - Native Red

Aquilegia formosa

Western red columbine produces elegant, nodding red-and-yellow flowers with distinctive backward-pointing spurs held above finely divided, blue-green foliage. Native from Alaska to California and east into Alberta, it is a favorite of hummingbirds, which are drawn to the tubular spurs full of nectar. Though individual plants are relatively short-lived, it self-seeds readily to form naturalized colonies in woodland edges and mixed borders.

Soil needs

Western red columbine prefers moist, humus-rich soil with good drainage and is often found naturally in open forests, meadows, and streambanks. It tolerates a range of soil textures as long as moisture is consistent, especially during the spring growing season.
