A triangular-stemmed, perennial wetland grass growing up to 1.5 meters in height with leaf structures growing from its base and stems. The inflorescence appears as short spikes in small clusters at the tip of spreading branches with many leaf-like bracts just below the inflorescence. Fruiting is a pale, lenticular achene surrounded by 4-6 bristles and covered in greenish-black scales.
